Are Fruits Good For Dogs?

When you are enjoying a snack and your friend is longingly sitting at your feet wanting a taste, it is tough to resist giving your furry friend a taste of your snack. If you are having fruit, there are fruits you can give your dog and some that are harmful for your dog.  While we consider fruit to be a healthy food for us, dogs digest foods differently and eating the wrong food can lead dogs to health problems.
Fruits allowed for dogs:
Apples:  A good source of vitamins A and C, low in protein and fat and provide fiber. Make sure you remove the seeds and core before giving to your dog.
Bananas:  A low calorie treat, high in potassium, vitamins and fiber. But because they are high in sugar content, they should be given in moderation.
Blueberries:  Rich in antioxidants, good source of fiber.
Cantaloupe:  Rich in nutrients, low in calories and a good source of water and fiber. They are also high in sugar so only give cantaloupe in moderation.
Cranberries: They are safe for dogs to eat but should be given in small quantities as they are high in sugar.
Mango: Good source of vitamins A, B6, C and E and potassium. But also high in sugar so give sparingly.
Oranges: Good source of vitamin C, potassium and fiber. Orange peel is not good for a dogs digestive system, so make sure you are not giving a piece of the orange peel.
Peaches: Good source of fiber and vitamin A but the pit is dangerous as it contains cyanide.
Pears:  High in copper, vitamins C and K, and fiber.  Make sure you are not giving the seeds as they contain small amount of cyanide.
Pineapple: Full of vitamins, minerals and fiber.
Pumpkin: Rich in antioxidants, considered a healthy food for dogs as it can relieve diarrhea and constipation in dogs.
Raspberries: High in fiber and vitamin C and low in sugar. They are considered good for older dogs because they have anti-inflammatory properties.
Strawberries: Rich in vitamin C and fiber.
Watermelon:  Good source of vitamin A, B6, C and potassium. No rind or seeds as they can cause intestinal blockage.
While the above fruits are generally considered safe for dogs, and some are actually beneficial to your dog,  they should be given in moderation and always remove pits, seeds and rind.  And as always, consult your veterinarian for guidance.
